About restorative justice

Since January 2005 the ACT Government’s legislated Restorative Justice Scheme has given people most affected by a crime the opportunity to meet to discuss the harm caused and work together to determine what needs to be done to repair that harm.

Restorative justice is available for every ACT offence involving a victim and matters can be referred at any stage of the criminal justice system – from the stage of a police report, all the way through to after an offender is sentenced. For less serious matters, the offence can be diverted, more serious offences require a guilty plea or finding.

With the inclusion of domestic, family and sexual violence offences in the scope of the Scheme in 2018, the ACT Restorative Justice Scheme has cemented itself as the most comprehensive Restorative Justice Scheme in Australia. It is also the only service which responds to offending by both adults and young people.
