About this event

In 1960, in the shadow of the Cold War, Russian spy Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) sends a letter to his intelligence counterparts in the West, expressing anxieties about his country starting a nuclear war. Believing him to be under constant surveillance, and suspicious of leaks within their own organisations, MI-6 and the CIA decide to task an ordinary civilian with being Penkovsky's intermediary: British businessman Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Posing as a business partner of Penkovsky's, the unassuming Wynne becomes his courier, smuggling top-secret Soviet intelligence from the USSR to London under the guise of business trips. The crucial intelligence – regarding Soviet missiles being transported to Cuba – ultimately helps to defuse one of the greatest international conflicts in history.

Based on a thrilling true story, and with another terrific performance from Cumberbatch at its heart, The Courier is a rousing and effective old-school spy adventure.
