About this event

In the aftermath of WWII, Captain Joseph Piller (Claes Bang) is assigned to identify and redistribute art that was stolen during the war. His investigation leads him to flamboyant art dealer Han van Meegeren (Guy Pearce), who appears to have been living it up – hosting hedonistic parties, mingling with top Nazis and profiting from Dutch art treasures – while the rest of Europe suffered.

He is swiftly charged with collaboration, a crime punishable by death, but Piller is not entirely convinced of his guilt. As he delves deeper into van Meegeren’s mysterious past, he soon finds himself in the unlikely position of defending the colourful man – who may in fact be a master art forger and swindler.

You’d think by now that we’ve seen most of the stories out of WWII, given how many films set in the period there have been, but The Last Vermeer presents a particularly astounding one that appears to have been all-but-forgotten.
