About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Explore the fascinating history of wax carving and learn this ancient craft to create an amulet. Amulets are intriguing artifacts that have held significant importance in various cultures, religions, and belief systems throughout history. They have transformed from powerful charms into jewellery that embodies beliefs, status, and protective or medicinal qualities, serving as personal statements and essential elements of fashion. With guidance, you will create your own wearable object, using potent symbols and personal beliefs, to carry as a talismanic charm.

You will be carving with soft jewellers’ wax, a material very similar to beeswax. This is a straightforward method of carving that allows the freedom to add and take away material from your sculpture, creating organic shapes. This artist-led workshop will lead you through the best use of tools and experimenting with the qualities of this flexible material. Participating in this workshop not only allows you to learn a new skill but also connects you with the rich tradition of wax carving; by the end of the session, you will have a unique, hand-crafted piece ready for casting.

Extra info: Your carved pieces will be cast at a later date, and the finished products will be delivered to the Cultural Centre for you to collect (postage can be arranged if necessary). The ticket price includes a finished metal piece, with a size limitation of approximately a 50c coin. You will have the option of casting in brass or white bronze. The warm, golden hues of brass or the cool, silvery tones of white bronze will capture the intricate details and craftsmanship of your original wax designs. Additional charges will be applied for larger pieces made by a participant, or if they would like a more expensive metal choice such as silver or gold.

Morning tea provided – tea, coffee, and biscuits. The ticket for this workshop includes gallery entry.
