Jan Williams studied sculpture in Brisbane in the late1970's under well known and loved sculptor, Len Shillam.
Sculptors Queensland was the brainchild of Len and his wife Kath Shillam, also a renowned sculptor. Jan has been a long time member and strong supporter of SQ events, especially the Brisbane Sculpture Festival. Jan now also manages the SQ Membership and organises the monthly Forum presentations with guest speakers. He has now generously offered to demonstrate how to make a plaster mold and how to take a cast from a mold.
Not many sculptors cast their own work and even fewer use polyester fibreglass. It has disadvantages but many more advantages to using it. Jan has worked with this medium at the Queensland Museum's Exhibition Construction workshops for 29 years. It has also become the preferred medium for most of his own striking and award-winning sculptures.
In this short introduction to mold-making and casting, attendees are encouraged to take notes and photographs and ask questions. There will not be an opportunity during this introductory demonstration for hands-on participation, but if there is sufficient interest, a workshop or a session during a "Show n Share" could be organised.
This Introduction will be of most interest to people who've not done any molding and casting before. Jan plans to demonstrate the process, starting with how to mix plaster, to making simple two piece molds and multi piece molds. If there is time, Jan will demonstrate simple casting as well.
