Join author, Angela Costi, as she discusses her latest poetry collection, which examines her life as an advocate for her Cypriot parents, her working life as a lawyer and a community writer. Advocacy is something many of us do in our capacity as carers, supporters and compassionate people. Some of the challenges of being an advocate are unpacked during this session.
Angela Costi is a poet and writer with a background in social justice, law and community arts. The author of six poetry collections, including Honey & Salt (Five Islands Press, shortlisted for the Mary Gilmore Prize 2008) and An Embroidery of Old Maps and New (Spinifex Press, awarded the prize for Poetry in English by the Greek Australian Cultural League 2022). Her chapbook Adversarial Practice (Cordite Poetry Review) was commended in the Wesley Michel Wright Prize 2024. She won the University of Canberra’s Health Poetry Prize 2024 and received the High Commendation for Contribution to Arts and Culture, Merri-bek Award 2021. In 1995, she received a grant from the National Languages Board to study Ancient Greek drama in Greece. She is known as Αγγελική Κωστή among the Cypriot diaspora, which is her ancestry.
