Dean Greeno is truwulway pakana man of lutruwita/Tasmania and an artist and researcher. He was born at Whitemark on Flinders Island and has continued to return to the island each year, going fishing with his father, grandfather, and extended family, gaining a clear understanding of seamanship, shipwright skills and respect for Sea Country.
Greeno’s art practice centres on sculpture, drawing heavily upon his pakana cultural connections to Country and traditional practices. Recently Greeno has worked with his father and son on a contemporary traditional canoe project. This interpretive rediscovering of the traditional construction and design of bark canoes demonstrates the continuation of their living culture and its core practices.
Chosen as a 2024 Telstra NATSIAA Finalist, Dean’s work tunapri milaythina muka, To know Sea Country through making 2024 speaks to identity, cultural continuity and adaptive generational activity prior to and following disruption.
