Baby Safe Program - Baby First Aid/Baby Basic Life Support

Suitable from 34 weeks of pregnancy onwards

In this class you will learn:

  • When to call 000 for an ambulance in an emergency
  • Baby cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR)
  • Management of choking on milk
  • Management of choking on food or a small object
  • Management of a febrile convulsion
  • Button battery safety
  • Bath and water safety

You will also be able to ask your Educator, A/Professor Rose Boland and/or Narelle Wiseman questions during the class in real time and have your questions answered. There will also be a question and answer session at the end of the class.

All virtual classes via zoom can be viewed on a lap top, desk-top computer, tablet or smart phone. You can even watch it on your Smart TV if your smart phone permits screen mirroring.

Once you register for this class, information about how to join will be sent to you.

At the completion of this class, all participants will be provided with:

  • Bath and water safety checklist
  • Kids Safe Australia- A Parent Guide to Kidsafe Homes
  • Kids Safe Australia- Button Battery Awareness brochure
  • List of websites and mobile phone applications for baby first aid

Meet the Director of the Baby Safe Program


Associate Professor Rosemarie Boland : Director: Precious Care Australia

PhD, Master of Nursing, Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse

Associate Professor Rosemarie Boland a newborn educator, neonatal intensive care nurse and midwife with over 35 years’ experience. She specialises in providing first aid training for expectant parents, and parents and families of newborn babies and ex-premature infants. In addition, she develops training programs, clinical practice guidelines and resources for medical, nursing, midwifery and paramedic healthcare professionals in Victoria in her role as a statewide perinatal educator with the newborn emergency transport service.

A/Professor Rose Boland has over 25 peer reviewed publications, has written text book chapters and helps develop guidelines for Ambulance Victoria around obstetric and newborn emergencies.

The Baby Safe Program was developed by A/Professor Rose Boland.

Meet our Senior Educator

Narelle Wiseman (MN, RN)

Narelle Wiseman is a newborn educator and neonatal intensive care nurse with over 24 years experience caring for newborn, sick and premature babies.

Narelle has worked in a variety of neonatal settings, including the Royal Women's Hospital neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), Monash Children's Hospital NICU, and in the Special Care Nursery (SCN) at Sandringham Hospital. She has also worked as a statewide educator with the Newborn Emergency Transport Service, Victoria. Narelle is currently the Nurse Unit Manager of the SCN at Cabrini Hospital.

In addition to working in Melbourne, Narelle has also worked in NICU in London in the United Kingdom. From 2018-2021, Narelle was a lecturer at the University of Melbourne, working with A/Professor Rose Boland to run the neonatal intensive care post-graduate course and the Special Care of the Newborn postgraduate program.

How do I find the zoom link to join the class?

When you book a position at this class, you will receive a confirmation email from Eventbrite that has the link to join the session. Reminder emails containing the zoom link are sent 48 hours prior to the class, then again 2 hours prior and 10 mins before the class begins.

Is this class pre-recorded or live and interactive?

This class is live and interactive. You will be able to ask the Educator questions during the class. There is also a question and answer time allocated at the end of the class .

How do I book a position for a one person (single attendee)

Will I receive written resources for the topics discussed in this class?

At the completion of this class, all participants will be provided with a range of fact-sheets and web -based (e-resources) for baby safety and first aid in an emergencies for babies 0-12 months. These will be sent via Eventbrite at the completion of the class.

Will I receive a recording of the class to view at a later date?

The class is not recorded- it is a live and interactive class.

Can I get a refund if I am no longer able to attend the class?

A full refund is available if you cancel >24 hours prior to the face-to-face class. However, the Eventbrite fee is not refundable. Cancellations <24 hours prior to the class (other than for hospital admission or a positive COVID-19 diagnosis) and 'no shows' are non-refundable.

Will I receive a Certificate of Completion having attended this class?

Attendance at a Baby Safe Program does not lead to a professional qualification or a certification of competency in baby first aid or baby basic life support. This is a non-accredited training course.

Can I claim the cost of this class on my Private Health Insurance?

Most Private Health Funds do not offer rebates for childbirth education classes. Please check with your provider.
