Baby Safe Program - Baby First Aid & Baby Basic Life Support class


The Baby First Aid & Basic Life Support - Small group class combines hands-on learning of baby first aid / baby basic life support skills for babies and infants 0-12 months of age.

This class is suitable from 32 weeks of pregnancy onwards or any time in the first 12 months after your baby is born.


Your program includes:

Baby First Aid & Baby Basic Life Support hands on, face-to-face training in:

  1. When to call 000 for an ambulance
  2. Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR)
  3. Management of choking on milk
  4. Management of choking on food or a small object
  5. Management of febrile convulsions
  6. Button battery ingestion
  7. Bath and water safety
  8. Food allergy and allergic reactions

Practical skills training using the Laerdal "Baby Anne" Manikins:

  • Baby cardiopulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR )
  • Management of an infant choking on milk
  • Management of an infant choking on food or a small object


All participants will receive a Baby Safety resource pack including:

  • Red Nose Safe Sleeping brochure
  • Red Nose Supine is Safest infographic and information sheet
  • Recognising signs of an unwell baby information sheet
  • Kidsafe Button Battery brochure
  • Royal Life Saving Society Keep watch at bathtime brochure
  • Evidence-based apps and websites for a range of Baby Safety resources

PLUS

Baby Basic Life Support Fridge Magnets

  • Baby cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (Baby CPR ) for babies 0-12 months
  • Management of a choking infant (0 - 12 months)


2.5 hour program:

  • 2.5 hours face-to-face held at Prahran High School
  • 1 hour of online e-learning (including video resources and self-tests)
  • Limited to 8 couples per class (16 attendees max)

Associate Professor Rosemarie Boland : Director: Precious Care Australia

PhD, Master of Nursing, Registered Midwife, Registered Nurse

A/Professor Rosemarie Boland a newborn educator, neonatal intensive care nurse and midwife with over 30 years’ experience. She specialises in providing first aid training for expectant parents, and parents and families of newborn babies and ex-premature infants. In addition, she develops training programs, clinical practice guidelines and resources for medical, nursing, midwifery and paramedic healthcare professionals in Victoria in her role as a statewide perinatal educator with the newborn emergency transport service.

A/Professor Rose Boland has over 25 peer reviewed publications, has written text book chapters and helps develop guidelines for Ambulance Victoria around obstetric and newborn emergencies.

The Baby Safe Program was developed by A/Professor Rose Boland. All face-to-face, Deluxe Program classes and private sessions are taught A/Professor Dr Rose Boland.

Frequently asked questions

Can my partner or other family member book a place at this program?

Yes, anyone can book a place to attend the Baby Safe Program. This includes parters, grandparents, sisters and brothers (over 18 years of age) Please book a place for each person who is attending with you.

Can I get a refund if I am no longer able to attend?

A full refund is available if you cancel >24 hours prior to the face-to-face class. However, the Eventbrite fee is not refundable. Cancellations <24 hours prior to the face-fo-face class (other than for hospital admission or a positive COVID-19 diagnosis) and 'no shows' are non-refundable.

Can I claim the cost of this class on my private health insurance?

Most Private Health Funds do not offer rebates for childbirth education or Baby First Aid classes. Please check with your provider.

Can I bring another child/older sibling to the class?

Sorry- we are not able to accomodate siblings or children/infants over the age of 6 months at this class.

Can I bring my baby with me?

Babies under 6 months of age are always welcome.

What COVID-19 /RSV/ Influenza precautions are in place?

To minimise the risk of transmission of infection, the following are provided: - Class size limited to 8 couples (16 attendees maximum) - Alcohol-based sanitiser at every table - Each participant will have their own manikin - All consumables are discarded at the end of the class

Will I receive a First Aid Certificate on completion of this program?

Attendance at a Baby Safe Program: Baby First Aid/Baby Basic Life Support class does not lead to a professional qualification or a certification of competency in basic life support or infant resuscitation. This is a non-accredited training course.
