About this event

Blood Wedding is about forbidden love between two people from rival factions/families. Adapted from Lorca’s play, written in 1933 amidst political extremism and calls for change and revolution, this new production is timely. It positions the performance into the here and now - at this fragile time in the world.

At its heart, Blood Wedding is about the personal effects of war, and the struggles of women to find their voice in a male dominated society. It pits tribe against tribe. Class against class. All to a devastating end.

Using projections, a searing/atmospheric soundscape, and heightened physicality, the work questions traditions, boundaries, gender, morality, human savagery, freedom, the power of love - and the power of the ‘knife’. Themes that resonate today as loudly as they did back in Lorca’s time.

Knives. Knives. Curse of God on the man who invented them. Do you know the power of a knife? Have you ever packed a knife wound with salt? Stuff the guts back into the stomach cavity? You ever seen a man slit from his throat to his groin? I’ll talk about knives if I want to. I know knives. (Mother: Blood Wedding)
