About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Mallee Sustainable Farming is hosting a webinar on strategies for soil carbon management, with a focus on the Mallee environment and farming systems. The session will feature insights from Dr Karl Andersson, Research Officer in Soil Carbon (NSW DPIRD), and Dr Amanda Schapel (SA PIRSA). Both experts will share relevant research and practical approaches to enhance soil health and maximise soil carbon stocks in the Mallee landscape.

Topics for discussion:

  • Introduction to soil carbon and its role in farming systems
  • Expected soil carbon levels in the Mallee
  • Factors influencing soil carbon levels
  • Management practices to stabilise or increase carbon in cropping and mixed farms.

This webinar is supported by the Soil CRC as part of the ‘Soil Carbon Capacity Building Resources for Farmers and Advisors’ project, proudly supported by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) as part of the Primary Industries Productivity and Abatement Program (PIPAP).

Dr Amanda Schapel is a soil scientist with over 20 years’ experience working with farmers across south-eastern Australia to improve soils, with a focus on overcoming constraints to plant growth in sandy soils. She is based in Adelaide where she works as Principal Officer – Soil Action with PIRSA.

Dr Karl Andersson is a soil scientist with 25 years’ experience throughout NSW. Karl has worked in regions from the high rainfall to the semi-arid zones, in fields including soil mapping, agronomy, soil carbon, nutrient cycling, and irrigation, dryland and urban development. Based at the Tamworth Agricultural Institute, Karl works to enhance soil management practices within the NSW agricultural sector and is an experienced researcher and communicator of soil carbon information.
