About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours

Conversations Matter provides a program of education and research to improve healthcare communication and supportive care across regional cancer centres in Victoria.

We warmly invite all health professionals working in or associated with regional cancer centres and linked health services in Victoria to attend this workshop.

This is an interactive workshop and you will leave your camera on and need a working microphone for the session.

    About the workshop

The way in which we give or explain information can strongly impact how much a patient remembers or recalls instructions and important details. This in turn affects how well-equipped patients are to follow treatment plans and work together with health professionals for improved outcomes.

This interactive webinar will provide participants with an understanding of evidence-based strategies and frameworks to enhance conversations in which you need to give information.

We will explore the concepts of information sequencing, aiding and checking recall, and how to effectively structure conversations for shared understanding.

    Workshop Learning Objectives

    During this workshop participants will:

    • Develop an understanding of the evidence-based frameworks and models for effective information provision in healthcare.
    • Gain awareness of the skills to aid and check for recall and understanding in conversations with patients.
    • Develop skills to observe and deconstruct conversations with patients by analysing example interactions.
    • Apply new skills by engaging in experiential learning with the facilitators.

    Facilitators

Meg Chiswell is an international expert in healthcare communication from Deakin’s Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare (OCPH).

    Who should attend?

All health professionals associated with regional cancer centres and linked health services in Victoria, who would like to develop their skills and confidence in giving information to patients, families and carers.
