Italy is divided into 20 distinct geographical regions, with Emilia-Romagna - situated in the north - being both affluent and geographically varied. It shares borders with six other renowned wine-producing regions: Marche, Tuscany, Liguria, Piemonte, Lombardy, and Veneto. The region’s name is derived from the ancient Roman road, Via Aemilia, which ran along the foothills of the Apennine Mountains, and Romagna, a former administrative center of the declining Roman Empire, once headquartered in Ravenna.
Emilia-Romagna boasts a total of 14 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, contributing to Italy’s impressive collection of 60 inscribed locations. Some of the most notable sites are found in Bologna, Ferrara, Modena, and Ravenna.
Renowned for its fertile land, the region is home to more than 200 traditional IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) products and 26 ingredients awarded DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) status. Among its most famous culinary specialties are Parmigiano Reggiano cheese, Balsamic Vinegar of Modena, Prosciutto di Parma, Mortadella di Bologna, and Culatello di Zibello.

In the world of wine, Emilia-Romagna is best known for its sparkling Lambrusco. According to Carol Plantamura in When in Emilia Romagna, the region’s wines generally fall into two categories: lighter, drier varieties from Emilia in the west, and richer, more full-bodied wines from Romagna in the east.
Romagna’s white wines include those made from the Famoso grape, which struggles in cold climates; the Longanesi grape, known for its sudden drop in productivity with age; and the Albana grape, which produced Italy’s first-ever DOCG-quality white wine. Albana wines are distinguished by their thin skin, high polyphenol content, strong tannins, and fragrant notes of green apples and white pears. Another widely cultivated white grape is Trebbiano, though its quality varies significantly.
