ForrÓz Melbourne - Message from your Dance Instructors

Thanks to everyone that attended in Term 1. An incredible spirit, with a group of committed dancers made it very enjoyable, and seeing the progress in your dance skills is amazing. It was also really nice to see how you all helped each other with such grace and patience well done!

For Term 2 we are going to try something slightly different - a fresh approach to learning to dance forró. In the many years of doing dance classes of various styles, I have noticed that sometimes when we split the dance levels, it leaves us separated in a way that is hard to patch up later as we are learning different things, with different partners.

While there are benefits of going slower for beginners and improvers, it also limits what they are exposed to. And for the intermediate dancers, they may miss out on new steps as the dance evolves over time. It can also rob them of an opportunity to learn how to lead or follow - if they were a follower, or a leader respectively.

So - this Term we will separate the dance classes by style of dance - one hour for Forró Universitário style, and then one hour of Forró Roots. This way everyone will have access to learning what they can based on their dance skills, level and experience at the time.

We also have changed the venue and day so please read the information below.

Of course - dancing is not just about lessons so please join our WhatsApp groups and keep connected with us, and information about upcoming socials & events at https://linktr.ee/forrozmelbourne

Looking forward to another great Term of forró dancing!

José and Bianca

ABOUT FORRÓ

In the world of Brazilian dance, if Samba is the queen then Forró is the king!

Forró is a partner dance with a number of styles from different regions in Brazil. The two most prominent styles are Universitário which is led mainly with hands, and Roots which is led mainly with body and leg movements.

At the ForrÓz dance school we teach both!

Universitário style is a bit easier to start with and is akin to Salsa where we mostly lead with our hands. The genre of forró music that generally goes with it is Xote.

Roots style has more subtle leads, is very dynamic and playful. Forró roots style is generally a lively and faster dance that requires the leader to interpret the music, and has more subtle leads. Maintaining body connection with your partner & holding your balance is a vital aspect - akin to Tango.

There is no partner required, and in our classes dancers are expected to dance with everyone in the class. When you enrol, please indicate whether you prefer to lead, or follow, or both as this will help with us evening up the numbers.

Thank you for considering dancing with us and we look forward to seeing you at our forró dance classes and social events.

Warm regards,

ForrÓz Melbourne

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a partner?

Simple answer is NO. We will adjust the class to the attendees on any night. There are 2 roles - leader and follower. More experienced dancers can both lead and follow, but we recommend you learn to do one role well first.

How do the classes run?

In general, we start with 2 freestyle dances where you practice what you have already learnt. We do a quick warm-up , then start the lesson for the evening. We will leave 10 mins at the end of the class purely for practice that both your mind and body need. Our instructors are there to assist you.

Can I take photos or video of the class?

NO - The ForrÓz Melbourne dance classes take time to develop and are part of our unique teaching method. However, we ask that you provide permission for our forró instructors to record and share the dance classes ONLY with the full term dance students - to make it a safe space for everyone to learn.

What about birthday Rodas ?

YES - Photos and video recording are permitted for the birthday Roda! Brazilians celebrate birthdays through a birthday dance as a Roda - the person who is celebrating their birthday stays in the middle to dance with everyone, and dancers form a circle around them waiting for their turn to dance!

Brazil has a reputation for its music, but forró is king!

Forró people (forrózeiros) are friendly and very welcoming. Even if you have never danced before, you are welcome to join us in dancing. Most of our events start with a beginner's class, and even where none is scheduled, many of our more experienced dancers will come and help you get started.

What is Forró?

Forró is a lively and popular music style that is danced as a partner dance. It is the people's dance that is danced by young and old!

It originated from Brazil´'s North-East and has now spread across the world, with a regular schedule of festivals in many countries.

Forró music can be both very traditional & also quite modern. There is a whole family of related rhythms: Baião, Forró, Xaxado, Xote & Arrasta pé.

You will often hear live Forró bands playing at a public plaza near market stalls, or at parks or beaches.
