Foundation Training for Working with People with BPD in Non-Clinical Settings - 1 day
This training is ideal for support workers in non-clinical settings who are beginning to develop their skills in working with people who have BPD and explores the core common factors of effective engagement with this cohort.
This workshop will develop support workers’ understanding and practice in working effectively with people with BPD. It will include a developmental understanding of factors contributing to a diagnosis of BPD, the ongoing effects of early life experiences and complex childhood trauma, and the role of therapeutic relationships in treatment. The workshop will also focus on the assessment of, and working with risk, as well as principles for treatment and treatment planning.
Learning Objectives:
On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Understand how BPD occurs and presents
- Identify the principles of effective, therapeutic supportive relationships with people living with BPD
- Set and maintain limits and boundaries with clients and work with strong emotions
- Practice various grounding skills to stabilize emotions
- Demonstrate an awareness of risk factors and assess the severity of risk
- Appreciate the importance of self care, self awareness, and reflection when engaging with people who have BPD

Presenters:
Andy Bouwman is a mental health social worker with 10 years’ experience working in public mental health services in Victoria. Through his work within community and acute teams, he has supported clients with BPD in a variety of settings. Andy is a senior clinician and member of the ACT & Complex Care teams at Spectrum, providing individual and group therapy programs.
Renee Harrison is a Senior Mental Health Nurse at Spectrum, working for over 20 years in both the public and private mental health sectors. She has a passion for working with youth and spent over a decade working on the Child and Youth Early Psychosis Team. Her interests extend to working with individuals with a lived experience of personality disorders and complex trauma. She currently works on the DBT and Workforce Development Teams. This allows her to support people to build a life worth living, share knowledge and work to decrease the stigma associated with personality disorders. Outside of Spectrum she is a Non-Executive Board Director at 2 Rural Health Services and is a Community Member with the Mental Health Tribunal. Through this she hopes to contribute to high quality health service delivery, along with providing a validating and supportive space for people attending tribunal hearings.

There is very limited 2-hour street parking available in the area. All day parking is available in:

- 35 Elizabeth Street, Richmond – 11 minute walk ($20 a day)
- 1 Allowah Terrace, Richmond – 12 minute walk (about $26/day)
