Monash Film Society’s flagship production workshop of the semester is here.
Sick of lighting tutorials that assume you have $500+ to burn? Frame by Flame is a practical, no-fluff workshop on how to achieve cinematic lighting on a micro-budget – without cutting corners on quality.

Run by Kelsey Kim and Himalaya Joshi (the team behind this semester’s Ignite the Page short film screenwriting workshop), it covers everything from lighting theory and style to hands-on DIY setups, ending with a scene recreation that proves budget lighting can look professional.

Whether you're just starting out or looking to level up your visuals – this is the one to show up for.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any experience in lighting or filmmaking to attend?

Nope, none at all! We’ll be covering everything from the basics of cinematic lighting to creative techniques used on film sets – all explained clearly and accessibly. This workshop is designed for beginners and returning creatives alike.

Do I need to bring anything?

Nope – everything will be provided! Just bring yourself, maybe something to jot down notes (if you want to), and a willingness to experiment.

Will there be hands-on activities or is it just theory-based?

Yes! The second half of the workshop is fully practical – you'll use real lights to recreate professional film lighting setups on a DIY budget. The goal is to walk out knowing how to light a scene yourself, not just having watched someone else do it.

What exactly will I learn in this workshop?

You’ll learn key lighting principles (styles, set-ups, techniques), understand how lighting shapes mood and meaning in films, and then apply it all in a guided DIY lighting session – including recreating a shot from a well-known film using low-cost gear.

Will there be networking opportunities?

Definitely. You’ll be working in small groups for the practical activity, with plenty of room to connect with fellow filmmakers. We’ll also share a contact spreadsheet so you can stay in touch after the event.
