About this event

Learn the artform of joke-writing with the Sydney Comedy School!


Meet new people, have fun, and learn the secrets of comedy.


This is Sydney's longest-running stand-up comedy class. We've been running the class since 2022.


How it works

  • Join the class where you will learn stand-up comedy.
  • You'll gain insight into a different stand-up comedy technique each class.
  • You'll share your jokes with others in the class, and get to meet some new people.


After the class

  • Everyone will join our 'singles and mingles' table, where you will hang out with likeminded people.
  • Couples are welcome! We usually get quite a few people coming to the class for their date night.
  • There is Sydney's favourite Tuesday night comedy show from 7:30pm - most of the class stay to watch the show.


What you should bring

Please bring a smartphone or notepad so you can write jokes!

Frequently asked questions

I want to learn stand-up and improve my public speaking - what's the best way to do this?

Please join our stand-up comedy course, our public speaking course, or our workplace comedy course. This is the quickest and best way to improve. The free class that you're coming to will give you some insight about joke structure, but there is a lot more in our courses.

How does the class work?

You'll learn a joke archetype, and you'll write down some jokes in your phone. You'll then share them with the class. It's chill - you won't get up on stage or be the centre of attention.

I'm scared - if I come will I be made fun of?

It's not that kind of class. We get together, and write, and share. It's like a writer's room for budding comedians. It's fun! And will get you thinking creatively about your writing.

How does the comedy show afterwards work?

Most people do stay for the comedy show though, so we highly recommend you do as well! If you aren't staying, we kindly ask you to leave the room and head downstairs by 7pm.

I'd like to join your show, can I?

Yes, if you complete our Stand-Up Comedy Course, we can include you in one of our shows. This option is not available via the free class on Tuesdays. If you'd like to join a show but you aren't keen on a course to learn comedy, please join an open mic.

I would like to learn more about open mics and the comedy scene in Sydney. How do I do that?

Perfect - please look up Open Mic Sydney on Facebook, join the group, and learn more about the Sydney scene there. Please note that in our class we do delve into the Sydney scene. If you're interested, we encourage you to join the Facebook group or to join our Stand-Up Comedy Course.

Can I get on stage and practice with the mic?

Not in this class - it's a writing class designed to help people learn a bit about stand-up comedy. If you're interested in practicing with the mic, please join our stand-up comedy course or our public speaking course.
