Description

*** Seminar date changed to Friday 8 November ***

Schur polynomials are the characters of finite-dimensional irreducible representations of the general linear group. In thi seminar, Dr June Huh will discuss both continuous and discrete concavity property of Schur polynomials. There will be one theorem and eight conjectures. Based on joint work with Jacob Matherne, Karola Mészáros, and Avery St. Dizier.

No background beyond basic representation theory will be necessary to enjoy the talk.

*The seminar is followed by network lunch with Dr Huh. Please register online for catering purposes.

Speaker

Dr Huh is a Robert and Luisa Fernholz Visiting Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study and Princeton University, USA. He applies tropical geometry and singularity theory to problems in combinatorics and other areas. He is best known in the field of mathematics for his proof of the Rota conjecture, which led him and fellow collaborating mathematicians to receive the 2019 New Horizons in Mathematics Prize as part of the Breakthrough Prize series.

Dr Huh received his Bachelor of Science from Seoul National University in 2007 and PhD in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 2014. He was a speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2018.
