Welcome to the Initial Assessment and Referral (IAR) & Decision Support Tool (DST) Training registration page.

Background

The Initial Assessment and Referral Guidance (IAR) and Decision Support Tool (DST) is a national initiative from the Department of Health and Aged Care on establishing effective systems for the initial assessment and referral of individuals presenting with mental health conditions in primary health care settings by supporting GP's and other clinicians to determine the most appropriate level of care for that person seeking mental health support.

It is designed to provide:

Advice relating to initial assessment and intake considering eight holistic domains that are important for referral decision making in mental health.
A description of evidence-based services by level of intensity (the five levels of care)
Criteria to assist with matching an individual to a level of care that is most likely to meet the individual's treatment needs and recovery goals.

Audience: GP/GP registrars involved in the mental health assessment and referral process, practicing within the Murry PHN catchment.

The IAR-DST training will run for two hours and topics focus on:

Introduction to IAR and the development of the National Guidance
Orientation to the domains, levels of care (LOC), and DST
Clinical judgement and supported decision-making
Application of the IAR in assessment and intake settings (practical activity using a case vignette)
Local resources and updates on mental health referral processes

Part one of the workshop provides the background and orientation to stepped care, the IAR process, and the Decision Support Tool (DST). In part two of the workshop, participants engage in practical activity focusing on applying the IAR-DST to the prepared scenario.

By the end of the training participants will be able to:

Describe the development process of the Initial Assessment and Referral Initiative
Describe the 8 Initial Assessment Domains of the Decision Support Tool
Define the 5 levels of care and provide examples of mental health services that belong to each level of care.
Apply the IAR Guidance to use the decision support tool to generate a recommended level of care.
Apply the supported decision-making strategies to involve the patient in referral decision-making.

Louise Scheidl, Initial Assessment and Referral Training and Support Officer (Accredited), Murray PHN. Louise is a Mental Health Occupational Therapist with over 35 years' experience working across a variety of Mental Health service levels.

Participation: As part of this workshop is an interactive session, participants will need to join using a device, computer or laptop with a camera and microphone and keep video on during the workshop to engage in content and with other participants.

GP CPD Hours: For General Practitioners this activity has been approved for the following hours and types:

RACGP members that complete the IAR training are entitled to 2 CPD hours (1 Reviewing Performance hour and 1 Educational Activities hour). Activity ID: 484615.

ACRRM members that complete the IAR training are entitled to 2 CPD hours (1 Reviewing Performance hour and 1 Educational Activities hour). Activity ID: 35442.
Please note, full participation in the workshop is required to be issued CPD hours.

GP Reimbursement: A one-off reimbursement of $300 is available for GP's/ GP Registrars on completion of the training, unless already being paid for their time by a Commonwealth funded service (e.g., Adult Mental Health Centers or Aboriginal Medical Services). Please note that full participation in the workshop is required to be issued payment. Details for reimbursement will be emailed post workshop.

National IAR project - Third party data sharing disclaimer:

To facilitate the evaluation of the IAR Program, participant data may be shared for the purpose of determining program impact. Partiicpant details may be provided to the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care (the Department) or a Pimary Health Network(PHN) and may be passed on to third parties engaged by the Department or PHN for evaluation purposes.

Third party agencies may be engaged to assess the impact and quality of the IAR training program. This may require access to participant data, inlcuding contact/demographic information, post training evaluations and feedback. This data assists in analysing the effectiveness of the program. The IAR program provided by the Department adheres to the Australian Privacy Principles Act (1988).

Collation, analysis or reporting of data by the Department or any agencies engaged by the Department will be de-identified.

Training participants contact details will be kept confidential and not released by the Department except to agencies engaged for evaluation to enable participants to be contacted and invited to participate in voluntary/optional additional engagement or evaluation activities. Informed consent for participation in any engagement or evaluation activities will be sought. Participants can choose not to participate.
