About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

Join me to learn skills, tips and tricks of shirt making in the studio while making your own shirt. The perfect chance to learn to create unique and individual fashion items that reflect your personality!

These classes will be held over four consecutive Monday mornings, and are suitable for those who are confident using the sewing machine and have advanced beginner - intermediate sewing experience.

Don't be afraid to challenge yourself - I'll be there to guide you at every step!

While sewing your chosen variation of a classic shirt you will learn & practice the following shirt-making techniques:

  • pattern layout & cutting out
  • fabric pattern matching techniques
  • stay-stitching
  • Front self facings and variations
  • Patch pocket
  • Double-pointed darts
  • Yoke - Burrito method
  • Top stitching
  • Collar & Collar stand
  • Adding collar stays
  • Flat fell seams
  • Placket opening
  • Cuffs, including French cuffs
  • Buttonholes and attaching buttons
  • Using a buttonhole cutter

You will need to bring along:

  • Your sewing kit: scissors, tape measure, pins, tailors chalk etc.
  • Your sewing machine, power cord, bobbins & accessories or if you prefer, use one of our lovely computerised machines
  • Sewing machine needles to suit your fabric
  • A copy of your chosen pattern. We will email you a list of suitable patterns, including commercial printed patterns as well as downloadable PDF patterns for you to choose from but some examples are: Simplicity 8753; McCalls 6044; Kwik Sew 4075; Thread Theory - Fairfield Button Up (great for that 'portly' man in your life); Elbe Textiles - Cornell Shirt (a gender neutral style with grandpa collar); Common Stitch - Finch Button Up. We include a couple of options in case you'd like to make a woman's shirt or shirt dress (I'm personally a fan of the Boyfriend shirt).
  • Fabric, interfacing, thread and buttons as per the pattern requirements. Recommended fabrics for shirt-making include light to mid-weight woven natural fabrics such as linen, cotton. If you need help or advice with this please do contact me for assistance.

The class is subject to our terms and conditions found on our website https://www.kuruicottage.com/terms-conditions.

This workshop is also available privately anywhere within the greater Sunshine Coast/Gympie regions as our studio is fully mobile. For further information please contact me at lovetosew@kuruicottage.com for further information
