About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Join Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize finalist Kien Situ for a participatory performance where ancient philosophy meets live art. This performance blends the I-Ching, one of the oldest Chinese philosophical texts, with the meditative practice of ink painting.

Each participant will take part in a simple ritual—tossing Chinese coins six times to create a unique hexagram, a combination of six lines (either broken or unbroken) that represents the flow of yin and yang energies. The artist will paint each hexagram in real-time using ink and brush on rice paper.

The I-Ching, also known as the Book of Changes, is an ancient Chinese text that distils the natural world into 64 hexagrams, each offering insight into the cycles of change. Participants will be able to search for the meaning of their hexagram using information provided by the artist. Once the painting is complete, you will take home your unique hexagram as a personal artwork.
