"It Takes a Village": Partnering with Parents with Intellectual Disabilities

"It takes a village" emphasizes the crucial role of community support in parenting. No one should have to parent alone; by partnering with parents with intellectual disabilities, we can create the best opportunity for both them and their children to thrive.

Our goal is to bring together parents with lived experience, social workers, allied health professionals, legal practitioners, disability workers, and academics to explore how to build a supportive village and work together for the best outcomes for families where a parent has an intellectual disability.

The program features presentations from parents with lived experience and practitioners, the official launch of the "Learn Our Journey" resource, and a panel discussion featuring parents and practitioners on what it takes to build a village.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided by Nundah Community Enterprise Co-op's amazing Espresso Train!

The event will take place on Thursday 31st October 2024 at 9:00am (for a 9:15am start) at 76 Cressey Street, Wavell Heights, 4012.

Organized by

Community Living Association Inc. (CLA) is a not-for-profit community organisation that was set up by a group of young people with disabilities, their families and supporters in the late 1980s.

Our focus is on supporting people with intellectual and cognitive disabilities and young people at risk to get the most from their lives.

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach but in working with our constituents to help them find solutions to the issues and problems they face.

All of us have a right to be included in the community.  At CLA we see our role as helping to grow communities where all people feel valued and are able to share the unique gifts they bring.
