About this event

Gender and Disaster Australia is bringing our award winning Lessons in Disaster training to your community.

This training is being hosted by Ballarat Community Health with the support of Pyrenees Shire Council and Women's Health Grampians.

T ickets are free thanks to federal funding from the Commonwealth Government, through the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-2032.


Do you work with communities affected by the February 2024 bushfires or were you affected by these fires? Don’t miss out on our award-winning Lessons in Disaster training.

This training package is designed to strengthen the capacity of health, community and emergency sectors to challenge harmful gender stereotypes and inequalities, and understand their relevance in a disaster context. Delivered by expert trainers and facilitators, this package includes sessions on harmful gender stereotypes in disaster, family violence, men’s self-harm and suicide, and LGBTIQA+ inclusion.

Key training outcomes:

  • A deep understanding of the social construction of gender and the impact it has on men, women, children, and LGBTIQA+ peoples’ experience of disaster
  • Skills to better identify the behaviours, systems and structures that perpetuate rigid gender roles
  • Evidence-based strategies to facilitate equitable responses in and after disaster, and to ensure the safety of women and children
  • Clear pathways to support or refer appropriately when family violence is indicated

The program for the day is as follows.

9.30am to 11.30am Session 1: Gender and Disaster – the evidence

11.30am to 11.45am Morning Break

11.45am to 1.15pm Session 2: The Drivers of Family Violence

1.15pm to 1.45pm Lunch Break (light lunch provided)

1.45pm to 3.15pm Session 3: Disaster, Gender and Diversity

3.15pm - 3.30pm Afternoon Break

3.30pm - 5.00pm Session 4: Working Towards Change

THIS TRAINING PROVIDES PARTICIPANTS WITH:

• Knowledge of the concept of the social construction of gender and the impact on men and women’s experience of disaster

• Knowledge to identify the implicit and explicit behaviours of individuals, and the organisational practices that support rigid gender roles

• Strategies and actions to facilitate constructive responses by men in and after disaster and to ensure the safety needs of women and children are met

• Strategies to address gender inequalities

• Knowledge of how to refer appropriately when family violence is indicated

• Increased awareness of the value of building a gender-responsive organisation

Are you interested in becoming a GADAus trainer?

Gender and Disaster Australia (GADAus) is recruiting Lessons in Disaster graduates to join our nationwide pool of accredited trainers. If you possess professional training experience or an equivalent skillset, and are committed to promoting gender equity, we warmly invite you to submit an EOI to participate in our two-day intensive Train the Trainer program.

By joining our team of trainers, you will have the opportunity to learn about the different ways communities respond to and recover from disasters.

Training is competitively remunerated and ongoing support and professional development is offered by GADAus through membership of our Practice Leadership Group.

To become a GADAus accredited Trainer:

1. Complete all four sessions of Lessons in Disaster training

2. Complete an online EOI

3. Email your CV to r.mackay@gadaustralia.com.au

5. Complete the two-day Train the Trainer program

6. Deliver one session under supervision and attend a feedback session with the lead trainers

7. Sign the Licencing Agreement and return to GADAus

8. Commit to attending the Practice Leadership Group
