Lying Support Surface Prescription:
Foam, Hybrid, Alternating Air?
The support surface is the most important tool in a therapist’s toolbox for the prevention and management of pressure injuries but how do you decide which support surface is the best one to recommend for someone? The clinical evidence out there is mixed and contradictory and therefore support surface prescription can be confusing.
This presentation will help you understand the different types of lying support surfaces and how they work to prevent and manage pressure injuries to assist you in your clinical decision making.
Learning Objectives:
- The participant will be able to describe the causes of pressure injuries and how a support surface mitigates these causes to prevent and manage pressure injuries.
- The participant will be able to differentiate how a static foam, hybrid and alternating air mattress work to prevent pressure injuries including the mattress design and the materials used.
- The participant will be able to articulate the clinical justification for the prescription of the different types of support surfaces.
