As part of our ongoing support for students, you have the opportunity to participate in a Tertiary Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course. Find us in the John Goodsell Building or online to learn how to support family and friends when they need it.

First Aid training isn’t anything new. Almost everyone has learned to give CPR, put an arm in a sling, clean a wound, or compress a snake bite. We believe that Mental Health First Aid is just as important. As a student, you are always on the front line with your peers! This course has been designed with student life in mind. You'll walk away equipped with the right tools, knowledge and confidence to assist a fellow student developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

You can complete your MHFA course either entirely online or in person.

  • For online blended courses (mixture of eLearning and video conferencing) courses, some coursework must be completed before the session. If you're the type to thrive with self-directed learning, this format is probably for you.
  • Fully in-person courses go for longer but do not require you to complete pre-work. If you learn best in a group environment, you'd probably be a good fit for these sessions.

If you choose to get involved in an online blended course, it involves a two-step process. All students are required to:

  1. Complete the eLearning component, which comprises approximately six hours of online content.
  2. Attend two online Zoom sessions, each lasting 2.5 hours, conducted by our MHFA trainer.

Upon completing this training, you will have the opportunity to take an online Accreditation Assessment to receive a "Mental Health First Aider Certificate of Accreditation" valid for three years.

Please be aware that spaces are limited. If you register, make sure you are committed to finishing the eLearning component before the two online sessions via Zoom. Please note that the initial eLearning component typically takes around six hours, and you cannot participate in the Zoom sessions until you have completed it.

Frequently asked questions

Who can benefit from MHFA training?

MHFA is for anyone who wants to be there for their friends, peers, or family members when they're going through mental health challenges. It's not just for healthcare or psychology students—it's valuable for everyone.

What will I gain?

You'll learn how to be there for your peers who may need support with their mental health or experiencing a crisis through real-life examples and tailored resources to make learning easy.

Can I choose between online and in-person MHFA courses?

Yes, you have the flexibility to complete your MHFA course either entirely online or in person. Depending on availability, you may have the flexibility to switch registrations from online to in-person formats and vice versa as needed. Please reach out to us at courses@arc.unsw.edu.au.

What is the online blended course format?

The online blended format involves a mixture of eLearning and Zoom video conferencing. Some coursework needs to be completed before the first session. If you prefer self-directed learning, this format is suitable for you.

How long do fully in-person courses last?

Fully in-person courses are longer but do not require you to complete pre-work.

Are there any prerequisites for the online blended course?

Yes, you'll need to complete some pre-work eLearning modules before the first Zoom sessions if you choose the online blended format.

Are there content warnings for the eLearning modules?

There are no content or trigger warnings in the online component. Content covers topics like depression, suicide, self-harm, anxiety, trauma, eating disorders, psychosis, and alcohol/substance abuse. If it becomes too much, we recommend saving your progress, taking a break, and seeking support.

How many eLearning modules do I have to complete?

Most eLearning courses have five modules that need to be done in order. Some courses might have extra ones.

Can I save my eLearning module work and continue later?

Yes, you can manually save your progress. After each session, click the menu icon in the top right corner, then 'Exit Module' and '>> Click to Exit Module.' Just remember not to leave the course open and idle for too long.

What if I have technical issues with the eLearning course?

We recommend getting in contact with your MHFA facilitator. If problems persist, reach out to mhfa@mhfa.com.au.

Are there shorter MHFA courses?

There are currently no shortened MHFA courses. Current courses are designed as a 'whole' experience, either full days face-to-face or a mix of eLearning and video sessions.

What if I miss some sessions?

To get your MHFA Certificate of Completion, you need to attend all sessions. If you miss any, you can catch up by attending another program.
