About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Applicants for a new ACT Firearms Licence (category A & B) must successfully complete an approved course in Firearm Safety in the 12-month period ahead of the date when they wish to lodge their application. The courses we offer meet the requirement for an ACT Licence.

The Monaro Arms Firearms Safety Course consits of a practical element and participants must past the test.

ACT has firearm laws to protect public safety and promote the responsible and safe use of firearms.

This is the ACT Firearm Safety Course and it is a requirement that all new firearms licence applicants in ACT pass the course or a course approved by ACT Firearms

The course is based on demonstrating two units of the minimum national competency:

  • Understanding Firearms – about a firearms owner’s legal, social and personal safety responsibilities, and
  • Using Firearms Safely – about possessing, handling and using safely.

Please note that successful completion of the course does not guarantee the granting of an ACT Firearms Licence.

A person applying for a firearms licence for the first time is required to undergo a police check.

In addition there are a number of requirements an applicant must meet to apply for a firearms licence.

The applicant must:

  • provide genuine reasons for having a firearms licence
  • be 18 years or over
  • be viewed as a suitable person by the registrar
  • be able to prove his or her identity through 100 points of identification material
  • meet secure home storage and safety requirements for their firearm(s)
  • Provide proof of residency within the ACT.
  • demonstrating two units of the minimum national competency:
