About this event

  • Event lasts 8 hours 30 minutes

This one-day course is for Basic Physician Trainees (and interested Advanced Trainees) who are preparing to sit the Divisional Written Examination (DWE) in the Royal Australian College of Physicians. It will offer a comprehensive and in-depth overview of relevant theoretical and practical considerations in paediatric cardiology relevant to clinical practice, the written examination itself, and in preparation for the clincal examination.

Paediatric Cardiology can bewilder even the seasoned paediatric healthc care practitioner, and it is no surprise that trainees are often flummoxed by questions about ECG findings, Fick equations, and very bizarre cardiovascular physiology. Paediatric cardiology represents the largest of questions in the DWE, so it is paramount that trainees have a strong grasp of this content.

Attendees will have an opportunity to learn from experts in the Heart Centre for Children across The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. Short, focused lectures and plenty of multiple-choice questions will be covered to ensure trainees have an understanding of both what to know, and how to approach difficult questions in paediatric cardiology.

Lectures will be recorded and made available for viewing to registered attendees for a period of 6 months.

    Topics covered will include:

    • Cardiac physiology
    • Approach to acyanotic congenital heart disease
    • Approach to cyanotic congenital heart disease
    • Acquired heart disease in childhood
    • Practical interpretation of paediatric ECGs
    • Cardiac assessment of the newborn
    • Genetic and syndromic associations in congenital heart disease
    • Haemodynamic assessment in the cardiac catheter laboratory
    • MCQs

Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea will be provided to course attendees.
