Topic 1 – presented by Aidan Trend

Kurri Kurri Lateral Pipeline Project: Supporting Snowy Hydro’s Hunter Power Project

As we move towards a lower emissions future with more renewable energy generation, there is a need to firm renewables with gas fired power generation for peak demand periods. To support the development of Snowy Hydro’s Hunter Power Station project, APA has designed and built the Kurri Kurri Lateral Pipeline Project that includes a 24 km, 42 inch gas storage pipeline. The presentation will provide an overview of this project and some of its unique challenges.


Aidan Trend leads the Development and Integration function in Operations at APA. His team are responsible for integrating new assets, including the Kurri Kurri lateral pipeline project, into the operating business. Aidan has been with APA for 20 years in a variety of roles across projects, operations and asset management.


Topic 2 – presented by Liam Smith

Emissions Reduction: Optimising Pipeline Compression for Enhanced Efficiency and Sustainability

This presentation explores how optimising compression in pipeline networks is driving significant improvements beyond just emissions reduction. By enhancing efficiency, operators are also achieving benefits in maintenance, labour productivity, and customer service. The session will delve into the technical aspects of compression optimisation, share key learnings from implementation, and highlight best practices for ensuring sustained improvements in pipeline operations.


Liam Smith leads the Asset Management function at APA, overseeing the company’s national portfolio of assets. His team plays a critical role in ensuring these assets operate efficiently and cohesively to support the energy transition while maintaining safe, reliable, and affordable energy delivery to customers.
