The ninth annual Public Law in the Classroom workshop will be held in hybrid format at the Faculty of Law and Justice, UNSW and online via Teams on Thursday, 9 February 2023. Please indicate your attendance preference on checkout.
The workshop is organised by the Gilbert + Tobin Centre of Public Law at UNSW, the Public Law and Policy Research Unit at the University of Adelaide, the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law at Monash University and School of Law and Western Sydney University. The past eight workshops have been a great success, each attracting around 70 public law teachers from across the country and internationally.
Session 1 (11am-12:30pm): ‘Leveraging teaching for impact’
The aim of the session is to encourage discussion amongst the public law teacher community about how we can draw on work we are doing in the teaching space to assist our efforts in public engagement and impact—an increasing focus of our roles in the modern university environment. Given the current government’s commitment to referendums on the Uluru Statement of The Heart and Australia becoming a republic, panelists will share their thoughts on how academics can draw on the work they do in teaching public law courses to support the broader public conversation about referendums.

Session 2 (1:30pm-3pm): ‘Contextualising public law: Indigenisation, Decolonisation and Feminist perspectives’
This session will invite discussion amongst the public law teacher community about how to situate Australian public law in the context of its relationship with First Nations peoples and within broader conversations about decolonisation and gender, which in turn will provoke students to think about how our system of public law fits within that conversation. We are keen to hear any thoughts on practical strategies for this engagement and for ensuring students have a strong understanding of public law principles and doctrine, particularly in core subjects.

Hybrid mode
We look forward to joining you at the Public Law in the Classroom Workshop for 2023 to continue our tradition of camaraderie, collegiality and collaboration. There will be two panels, each running for 90 minutes. We would love you to join us in person in Sydney. However, we understand travelling to Sydney might be not possible for some of you. This is why the decision was made to run the event in hybrid mode.
We hope to see as many of you as possible in Sydney or joining us via Teams and we are excited about coming together after what has been couple of very tough years that has thrown up many challenges for the practice of public law teaching.
