The SAFEMinds workshop equips QLD state school staff to become 'Champions' in the use of the 'NIP it in the bud!‘ early intervention approach and the SAFEMinds Toolkit resources, including: SAFEMinds Online, and how to incorporate SAFEMinds into the school's existing professional learning and student well-being policies and initiatives.

Participants who complete SAFEMinds will:

• Develop an understanding of mental health in children and young people and how they can be supported through the SAFEMinds and the 'NIP it in the bud! ' early intervention approach.

• Develop an understanding of self-harm in children and young people and how to respond using the 'NIP it in the bud!' early intervention approach.

• Explore the 'NIP it in the bud!' Toolkit and how to use these resources, including the Safe and Healthy Bodies and Safe and Healthy Minds Brief Intervention Kits.

• Use se the entire 'NIP it in the bud!' early intervention approach and Toolkit resources by working through a case study.

• Reflect on local implementation of the 'NIP it in the bud!' early intervention approach in your school community.

• Develop an understanding of the SAFEMinds: At Home resources for families.

• Access a digital resources to help you facilitate SAFEMinds presentations to school staff and your parent community.

Who can attend this training?

SAFEMinds is open to all Queensland state school staff. Schools should consider how many staff members they nominate to attend, depending on a number of factors including size of their school. It is recommended that a minimum of 2 staff members attend. It is also strongly recommended that the school’s Guidance Officer attends the training.

The SAFEMinds program will be offered to any member of staff who is having a face to face conversation with students.

I work for a Catholic or Independent school, can attend?

No. The funding for the training is for only Queensland Department of Education staff.

I work in a TAFE with high school students, can I attend?

No. The funding for the training is for only Queensland Department of Education staff.

I’m a University student on placement in a DoE state school, can I attend training?

Yes. Uni Students on placement within DoE schools can attend with the support of their supervisor with written confirmation sent to Qldworkshops@headspace.org.au.

Is training available to other states or sectors?

How much does it cost for me to attend this training?

Free. The training is fully funded by the Queensland Department of Education. There may be costs to cover CRT or other staffing costs.

What tech to I need to attend online?

We deliver through Microsoft Teams and you require a stable internet connection, working camera and working microphone.

What if I have tech issues on the day?

Check your equipment prior to training and consult your IT department if you have technical difficulties. Your facilitator only can provide limited troubleshooting advice.

Why do I need to provide my personal contact details?

For emotional safety contact details must be provided. All information is deleted after training concludes. See the Privacy statement for more information.

Is this training run by my local headspace Centre?

No, this training is run by headspace Schools & Communities, which is a national initiative. Each headspace Centre is managed independently by a local agency with a local focus.

How is this training different from Be You?

The Be You initiative complements our training and can provide additional resources and consultation to your school around a whole school approach to wellbeing and supports schools to prepare, respond and recover from death by suicide.

Is training endorsed by Department of Education?

Yes, SAFEMinds In Practice is supported thanks to a contract between the Qld DoE and headspace.

Do I have to stay for the full day? I have to leave early/join late/ attend a meeting during the day

Yes. It is a condition of the training that you attend full time. Please choose a session time you can fully commit to. If you leave early, join late, or leave the training to attend to other matters, you will not be able to continue and will need to complete the full course at another time.
