About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour

Come and visit a magical world of children's environmental literature at Rainforest Reads this holidays.

Three local authors are sharing their books with daily storytime sessions, art and craft activities and inspiring displays. They want children and caregivers alike, to fall in love with a shy and beautiful moth, a bum-breathing turtle looking for a friend, and the little wallum sedgefrog who’s habitat is sprouting back to life after bushfire.

Hear the authors read their stories everyday:

  • 9.30am
  • 12.30pm, and
  • 2.30pm

Featured books:

  • Luca and the Moth, by Barbara Kelly. Illustrated by Paola Castro. Young readers will delight in this story of Luca, a child who meets a special and endangered moth in the rainforest, and discovers that she needs one type of vine to survive. Published by Bolly Gum Books, Nov 2024.
  • Alight, by Dr Sam Lloyd. Illustrated by Samantha Metcalfe. This story of fire and nature takes young readers on a wander through the wallum after a healthy bushfire. Native flowers emerge and seeds are thrown, as burrows are prepared for new life. Published by CSIRO, June 2023.
  • Rocky and the River in Peril, by Sunshine Coast Council’s pest education team. Illustrated by Michelle Lees. Children under 10 will enjoy meeting Rocky, the punk, bum-breathing Mary River turtle. He’s on the search for another turtle just like him but must overcome threatening feral animals and weeds overtaking his habitat. Will he survive? Published by Sunshine Coast Council, November 2024.

Meet these inspiring characters, have fun making book-inspired craft and relax in the rainforest reading corner this holidays.
