Risk Management: Identifying Financial Governance Red Flags Training for Non-profit Organisations

Part of maintaining effective governance as a committee member is being able to identify red flags that could indicate that all is not as it seems. While not every red flag indicates poor practice, working out which ones warrant further investigation and attention requires practice and continuous improvement in your checks and balances.

NPT’s ‘Red Flag’ finance training focuses on building the knowledge of the Board / Committee members so they can identify what’s important to narrow in on when things don’t seem right.

In this workshop, we will put the financial reports under the microscope and discuss where the financials commonly go wrong in organisations. There will be tips to identify potential financial red flags and a practical checklist to put in place to ensure your organisation maintains a proactive and positive risk culture.

• 101 of financial reporting
• Knowing what to look for in the financial reports
• Using the budget to track performance
• Understanding the importance of internal controls
• Reviewing common biases that impact decision-making leading to risky practices
• Using delegations to reduce the risk of financial blow-outs
• What others are doing to monitor the financials
• Developing a collective mindset of continuous improvement in oversight of the financials
