Robert Weil - Rheingau - 2023 Release tasting

Nicolas Langer-Pfaff (export manager for Robert Weil) joined us in the shop this morning(April 11th) with a bag full of 2023 Rieslings. Nicolas is a familiar face in the shop, having hosted numerous events for us over the past ten years.

The 2023s from Robert Weil blew us away. Nicolas calls it a "medium ripeness vintage" where temperatures were warm, but not as warm as 2022. In further contrast to 2022, there was much more rainfall. On one hand, this gave the vines some respite, but on the other, the warm and wet weather brough disease pressure in the form of powdery mildew. And this is where the great producers are separated from the good or the average producers: disease pressure means a much higher workload in the vineyard, so the Robert Weil team got to work.

Their hard work has paid off in a set of incredibly pure and balanced wines across the board. The wines have less overt fruit weight than the 2022s, but are more open and immediately pleasurable than the wines from the cool 2021 vintage which have always required patience, despite their inherent quality.

The best wines of any serious region seem to have it all. Where some Riesling producers may trade acid for fruit weight or may trade freshness for power, Robert Weil seems to ask “why have one when you can have it all?” Ches Cook, Five Way Cellars.
