Baby Safe Program - Safe Sleeping for preterm babies: Transition from NICU/SCN to home

Via zoom

This program has been designed for parents of babies born preterm, who are transitioning from the Special or Intensive Care Nursery to home. The focus is safe sleeping practices, to reduce the risk of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS.

A/Professor Rose Boland will outline and explain important changes you need to make when transitioning from the neonatal intensive and/or special care nursery to home to ensure your baby is in a safe environment every time they are placed down for a sleep.

This 2 hour virtual class (via zoom) is designed to compliment the E-learning program, Safe Sleeping for Preterm Babies: the transition from SCN/NICU to home.

In the Safe Sleeping for preterm babies class, you will learn:

  • Risk factors for Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI), including SIDS
  • NICU/SCN Nursery practices: what needs to change once you are home and why:
  • Sleep positions (why "back is best")
  • How to create a safe sleep environment for your baby at home, day and night
  • The importance of avoiding over-heating (thermal stress)
  • Dressing your baby for sleep
  • Clothes and bedding amount
  • Room temperature for sleeping
  • Protective strategies to reduce the risk of SUDI, including SIDS
  • Use of baby slings and carriers
  • Car capsules and car seats for preterm and low birth weight babies
  • Nursery products that are unsafe for babies, are not recommended, and can pose a risk of SUDI, including SIDS ('cot death').

You will also be able to ask A/Professor Rose questions during the class in real time and have your questions answered. There will also be a question and answer session at the end of the class.

All virtual classes via zoom can be viewed on a lap top, desk-top computer, tablet or smart phone. You can even watch it on your Smart TV if your smart phone permits screen mirroring.

Once you register for this class, information about how to join will be sent to you.

At the completion of this class, all participants will be provided with a range of safe sleeping resources for preterm babies 0-12 months corrected age.

There is also the option to purchase a Safe Sleeping for preterm babies e-learning package, which includes two 15 minute videos to compliment this class.

1. Safe Sleeping- to reduce the risk of SUDI

2. Safe Wrapping (swaddling) and use of a safe sleeping bag
