Although no two business plans are alike they should contain certain important elements.

    These elements, are:

    Executive Summary

    Business and Management

    Marketing Plan

    Operations Plan

    Financial Plan

    Appendices

Executive Summary - “An Overview of the whole concept”

This is a one or two page summary of your business idea. It emphasises the key points of your business plan and convinces the reader to read the whole plan. Although it appears first, the summary should be written last.

    Business and Management

Consider your proposed/existing business venture; what type of business it will be/is, your relevant skills and experience, your trading name, what the legal structure will be/is, and the proposed/existing premises on which your business will/does operate.

    Marketing Plan

Every other part of your Business Plan is dependent on the result of your Market Research and Analysis. The viability of the venture relies on information gained, for example, your sales forecast will directly influence the size of your operation and may influence your capital needs.

    Operations Plan

    Supply and Distribution

Describe the methods you will use/are using to supply and distribute your products/services. For example, will you/do you sell it yourself (B2C), or will you/do you use a third party (B2B).

    Staffing and organisation

Because most business failures are the result of management problems, you need to develop some qualities to successfully operate your business such as personal characteristic, technical skills, food business experience and management skills.

    Food Health & Safety

Be able to describe the procedures/policies you will/have put into place in order to meet your occupational health and safety responsibilities.

    Financial Plan

This is central to the evaluation of your venture’s potential. Understand the eight sections to be completed:

    • Schedule of Personal Drawings
    • Statement of Personal Net Worth
    • Sales Mix
    • Establishment Costs
    • Cash Flow Forecast
    • Profit and Loss Projection
    • Balance Sheet
    • Source of Funds

The business plan is a potentially powerful document, both in terms of maximising the chances of success of a small food business by ensuring that all aspects of business operations have been thoroughly planned and by providing a tool for a financial institution to evaluate the viability of the venture.

    What the experts say…

Experienced and Award-Winning Australian Chefs’ reveal what they wish they knew when starting out in the restaurant and catering industry.

    Frank’, Camorra, MoVide, Melbourne…

“Most importantly, I wish I had known more about the business side of running restaurants, I’d recommend doing a small business course that teaches you about managing staff, cashflow, and reading and managing a profit and loss statement. Don’t assume that you can do it all, but you need to have that basic understanding.” (Source: Restaurant Catering Magazine).
