About this event

The places where most of the world’s population live – cities and towns – are critical to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Not only is world population growing rapidly, but urbanisation rates are growing even faster. Around 2010, the proportion of the world’s population living in urban areas passed 50%, and it is anticipated that around 70% of the world’s population will be living in cities and urban areas by 2050. This makes urban areas a vital focus for achieving global sustainability: ensuring that cities and communities provide sustainable settings for human and non-human life, within the constraints of resources, food, water, pollution and responding to social, economic and cultural needs. This presentation outlines the scope and significance of urban sustainability, illustrated by positive responses taken by a range of international cities, including those striving for Net Zero emissions. Considerable attention is then given to how Australian cities – including the Gold Coast – are addressing the opportunities and challenges presented by SDG 11.
