Description
What: A one-day short course to give you basic skills in electronic construction and maintenance.
The class assumes no knowledge of electronics, and no prior skill with tools or soldering. If you are highly experienced with soldering or electronics, then this is not the right class for you.
Why attend? Once you can use small tools confidently, solder and unsolder, identify components, take apart and put together electronic assemblies, make cables and take measurements, then you have the cornerstone skills needed to maintain and support a radio station. With those skills you can solve most problems or provide input to expert analysis.
This class will teach you
- basics of soldering
- how to identify and use precision soldering techniques
- the process of making a cable
- how to identify and work with electronic components
- how to assemble a kit
- when to phone-a-friend
You will train and practice on individual workstations, under the guidance of highly experienced practitioner/teachers. Each student will build a number of assemblies and, depending on time available, you will leave with several completed items that will be immediately useful to you as a radio station technologist.
All materials and kits will be included in the course fee.
Lunch will be at your own expense, but there are food outlets close to the class location.
Be quick: the total class size is limited to 20 people, and attendees are required to be members of Technorama Incorporated. The instructors reserve the right to prioritise attendance by students with low exposure or skill levels.
Prerequisites: no prerequisites for this one, but you should have a keen desire to develop good tech and soldering skills.
BYO: Tools will be available in the classroom. If you already have your own small tool kit and a temperature-controlled soldering iron then BYO is a good idea. Generally, your toolkit should include precision sidecutters, needlenose pliers, a third hand/magnifier, and maybe a solder sucker and some solder wick. But don't worry about that yet. We will update you further if you're accepted into the class.
