About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

A travelling exhibition of small textile artworks and technique boards, transported around Australia in a suitcase. The exhibition becomes a learning tool about many different techniques in textiles.

For the Territory tour, in each place the suitcase visits, attendees can choose to be part of a collaborative community textile work to be exhibited at the Darwin Show in 2025. Attendees can make a small embroidery over a two-hour session using a template pattern. We can teach you three embroidery stitches, or if you already know how to embroider, maybe you can teach us a new stitch!

The Textiles Travelling Suitcase (TTS) is a Darwin-based community group with an interest in textile surface design. TTS has partnered with the Australian Textile Arts and Surface Design Association (ATASDA) to bring the suitcase to the Territory.

ATASDA promotes textile art and surface design and those who create it. Primarily based in NSW, Vic and Queensland, there are also regional and remote members across Australia.

Embroidery, slow stitching, hand sewing, machine embroidery, stitching, mending, repairing, patchwork, quilting … many different terms for textile arts which are experiencing a resurgence in participation across all age groups and genders. Growing the participation has flow-on effects to the individual and the community, including mental health, wellbeing and social inclusion, plus a side benefit of increasing the number of entries in the Royal Darwin, and other Shows.

The workshop is for people aged 10 years and older.

Photo and video release: we might be taking pictures and videos of this event to use for marketing or promotional purposes. By attending you agree to be photographed or filmed - but if you don't want to be photographed or filmed, please let us know on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I design my own small embroidery?

We'd really love you to use one of 20+ templates but you can let your creativity fly by embellishing the template in any way you'd like.

Which embroidery stitches will you teach?

Running stitch, blanket stitch and chain stitch

I already know how to do the stitches being taught. Can you teach me others?

We certainly can ... or may you can teach us a new stitch! We really like to learn new stitches!

I've never held a needle before - can I still come along?

Yes! We'll start from the very beginning - how to thread a needle, stitching with and without knots, and there'll be template embroideries to help you learn.

The Textiles Travelling Suitcase (TTS) organising team is a Darwin-based community group with an interest in textile surface design. We are four volunteers, supported by a much larger group of enthusiastic embroiders who will help to teach the embroidery stitches. We'll be visiting community groups during February and March 2025 with the travelling suitcase, and creating a collaborative community textile which will be displayed at the 2025 Darwin Show.
