Movie at the Southport Community Centre with Bar and Sausage sizzle after the film
Screening starts at 5 pm.
Deep in the wild Southern Ocean, halfway between Australia and South Africa, a snowy volcano, nine thousand feet high, rears up from the sea like a great white whale.
Australia's highest mountain is "Big Ben", a smoking glacier ringed volcano on our loneliest, most remote outpost, Heard Island.
In one of the least known yet most audacious Australian adventures of the 20th century, a team climbers sailed down to Heard Island twice before becoming the first people to attempt to climb the mountain. It’s a tale told with quirky humour by those who were there, backed up with their beautifully shot archival footage. The specially composed musical score pays tribute to the utter boldness of the quest, bringing to life this little known moment in Australian history.
The Southport community centre will be screening the award-winning movie about the expedition, "The Great White Whale" at 5.00 on the 17th of May.
