About this event

  • Event lasts 6 hours

Uncover the fascinating story of Australia and Japan in northern Queensland, centred around Townsville, home to Australia's first Japanese Consulate.

Join us in the morning for a symposium hosted both in person on the JCU campus and streamed online, with leading scholars and artists from both Australia and Japan. Food and tea/coffee will be provided for in person attendees following the symposium.

From the JCU campus, join us in the Townsville CBD for an immersive walking tour of significant local sites that bring this shared Australia-Japan history to life. You can explore a developing digital history trail showcasing these key places with photos and archival records, that will be available following the event.

A more detailed schedule, including a meeting point in the CBD will be provided to attendees closer to the date.

Connect with artists, educators, historians, and heritage professionals in this event hosted at James Cook University, and supported by the Australian Government through the Australia-Japan Foundation of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
