About this event

  • Event lasts 5 hours

Welcome to the Winter Solstice Soiree 2025!

This year will be more decadent, twice as rich and three times as cosy.

We have a bigger venue, with a real fireplace!

This is the party on the longest night - the shortest day - to gather and share stories of past, present and future. We will gather for cheer and to make connections.

In New Zealand, this holiday is Matariki- named after the constellation (Pleaides) that is seen in the sky at midwinter. Matariki is celebrated - like midwinter in many cultures - with storytelling, gathering for warmth, eating, drinking and cheer.

There will be feasting!

There will be cocktails, mocktails and beverages of choice!

There will be storytelling!

From 19:00 we will hear from four storytellers, who will stick to the rules - on-topic, 5 minutes, a true and heartfelt story that happened to them.

There will be rituals - the casting off of old ideas, and the planting of those new ones that you wish to cultivate with the turning of the season.

See you there!

Frequently asked questions

Who will be at this event?

This is a networking party with everyone invited by word of mouth. There will be people from various sectors - asset management, transport, urban design, technology, water, and many creative ones as well!

Where should I park?

While we encourage use of PT to get to the city, my research has found that the best value parking in the Crown Casino car park. There is also some parking within 100m at 200 Little Collins Street, and a Wilsons Parking on Russell Street (T&G Building 161 Collins) which is 400m away from Cabinet.

What should I wear?

Glad you asked! Dress to impress, dress fancy - it's a soiree, not a BBQ! Dress to honour the darkest night. Rich colours, bright colours, firey colours.

Will there be non-alcoholic drinks? Or is it just a big booze up?

This is an inclusive event, with the purpose of connecting people sharing stories, and creating an atmosphere of community. For the non-drinkers there will be mocktails, standard soft drinks, and of course the feasting. Naturally, the winter solstice has a deep, pan-cultural tradition of "cheer".
