About World Animal Day

Every year in early October people around the globe come together to celebrate the extraordinary diversity of animals we share our world with. It is an opportunity to remind ourselves of the importance of respecting and caring for our fellow creatures, and furthering strategies to protect the planet as our shared home.

Ninety-nine years ago, on 24 March 1925, Polish writer and publisher Heinrich Zimmermann organised the first World Animal Day in Berlin. The event attracted over 5000 people. A few years later a congress of animal protection organisations chose 4 October (feast day of St Francis D’Assisi, patron saint of animals and ecology) as the official date for the event. Sadly, Zimmermann was killed by the Nazis in 1942, but World Animal Day lives on.

The Blue Mountains Planetary Health Initiative joins this global movement with a World Animal Day event themed Promoting Respectful Cohabitation. The event will feature a number of info stalls and other activities (exhibition of local wildlife and how you can protect them, storytelling, film screening, planting for biodiversity, possum box construction workshop, music, etc.).
