Waverley library welcomes you to create paper cranes for World Origami Day.
November 11 is Remembrance Day and in Japan where the paper crane has become a symbol of peace after WW2, we will mark this day with the beautiful art of origami.
A symbol of peace, the paper cranes origins are linked to Sadako Sasaki, a Hiroshima resident who was two years old when the bomb fell in 1955. Sadako died ten years later from leukemia caused by the radiation from the bomb. Before she died, she tried to fold 1000 paper cranes, as legend has it that doing so will make your wish come true. Sadako folded 644 cranes before her death. Today people everywhere fold cranes and send them to the statue of Sadako Sasaki which stands in Hiroshima’s Peace Park.
Visitors to the library are welcome to leave their paper crane to display in the library. There will be origami paper and instructions how to make a crane.
We encourage you to sit, be mindul and create a beautiful paper crane.
The origami tables will be located in the library foyer all week unstaffed.
All skill levels and ages welcome to attend.
All cranes created at the library and donated will be displayed.
