The Writing with Confidence workshops are organised in a sequence of two sessions. These sessions will help you identify and practise some of the more troublesome elements of English grammar and expression. We will examine how language works to do the things you have to do in a thesis. The focus of the workshops will not be on teaching grammar, but on exploring the ways in which you can use language to achieve clear and confident academic writing in your thesis.
This session will look and language strategies for projecting an authoritative and analytical voice in your writing. We will cover:
- Claims and counterclaims
- Language for developing nuance
- Eliminating redundancy to produce ‘tight’ writing
- Resources for effective writing
You will be encouraged to bring a small sample of your writing to work on.
Why should I attend?
After this session, you will be more confident about your language use. You will be able to identify some common grammatical moves in academic English and use those elements to create a more critical and polished style. Just as importantly, you will be left with a resource bank that you can use to improve your language use.
Who should attend?
